10 critical skills required for the future

Following on from last week’s blog regarding vast changes for leaders and organisations, what skills do leaders need to look for in staff in the next decade? 

With revolutions becoming smaller in time frame as human technology advancements & innovation accelerates, adaptability, flexibility and cognitive skills are becoming more fundamental for companies to thrive. 

The following has been adapted from The Atlantic’s report – “Recalibrating the Classroom: Working and Learning in the 21st Century”.

1. Sense Making 

“The ability to determine the deeper meaning or significance of what is being expressed.” 

2. Social & Emotional intelligence

“The ability to connect with others in a deep and direct way, to sense and stimulate reactions and desired reactions.”

3. Computational intelligence

“The ability to translate vast amounts of data into abstract concepts and to understand data-based reasoning + analysis.”  

4. New Literacy Media 

“The ability to critically assess and develop content that uses new media forms, and to leverage these media for persuasive communication.” 

5. Cross Cultural Competency 

“The ability to understand and operate across different cultures, beliefs and industries.” 

6. Cognitive Load Management

With increasing exposure to growing loads of information, an ability to discriminate and filter information based on importance is fundamental. Maximising cognitive functions will also be required.

7. Novel & Adaptive thinking 

Proficiency at thinking and coming up with solutions to problems, and thinking in an abstract way in order to come up with new ideas and creative innovation. The ability to be fluid in ideas and thinking in order to change plans, pivot in projects and adapt to changes in processes.

8. Transdisciplinary 

“Literacy in and ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines.” 

9. Design mindset

“The ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes for desired outcomes.”

10. Virtual Collaboration 

“The ability to work productively, drive engagement, and demonstrate presence as a valued team member of a virtual team.”
