Setting Effective Goals

Forget New Years resolutions which are once off high level promises that tend not to be kept…

Have you set your goals for the year yet?……If not, below is a step by step guide to help you get started.

Start today with setting 1 goal and then (if you haven’t done already), set 3 Business/Career, 3 Personal Goals and 3 Education Goals to give yourself a great start leading into the New Year.

Education goals are not as common however are critical to set in terms of success and breaking down our personal fear barriers to ensure we are building on our weakest elements. These might include learning more about Managing your Finances, Property, Time Management, Leadership, Current Affairs – ie Reading the paper daily, Committing to learning more about your industry, Being a good parent etc etc.

In order to achieve your goals, you must know exactly what you want. Absolute clarity regarding your goals is essential to high performance. We get in life what we intend to get… be a success, you must have goals to be successful.

Below are a few quick tips to help you not only help set your goals but hopefully help achieve them as well.

3 Pre-Thinking Exercises:-


  • How would your life change if you received $1,000,000 cash today?
  • If you could make any significant changes in your life today, what would they be?
  • It is important to think about what is working and what is not working in your life. What are you going to do more of, what are you going to do less of in 2012?


How to Set Goals


  1. For each goal, write out your goal in detail – make it clear, specific and measurable. It is important that you actually commit this to writing.
  2. Ensure your goals are achievable and controllable.
  3. For each goal, write WHY these goals are important to you… will it change your life. It is important to build emotion and connectivity to your goals.
  4. List the main obstacles and limitations that stand between you and your goals. If you have set this goal before, write down why you haven’t achieved this yet/what has stopped you.
  5. List any additional knowledge/education/support/collaboration you need to achieve your goal.
  6. Now….drill down. For each goal, make a list of actions….. everything you can think of that you will have to do to achieve your goals.
  7. Organise your list by priority (importance) and sequence (what must you do before something else).
  8. Set deadlines on each action you are going to take


A Few Quick Tips to help you achieve your goals:-


  • Begin Now – Do something everyday to achieve your goals – make your goals a habit
  • Write your goals down and have them somewhere accessible (if possible, displayed where you can see them regularly).
  • Tell someone else about them – the more the better.
  • Set Review Points for your goals – calendar them now in your diary (to review at least bi-annually plus calendar your action points).
  • Set up an Accountability Partner or appoint a coach/trainer to work with you to build accountability and frequency of talking about your goals and actions. What you focus on expands. Ask me about how we can help you with this!
  • Celebrate like crazy small wins – make sure you congratulate yourself – celebrations helps us locks things in and be motivated to continue.


Why People Fail in their goals?:-


  • Don’t set them – less than 3% of people formally set goals.
  • Don’t know what to do
  • Don’t do what they know
  • Don’t do what they say
  • Don’t complete what they start
  • Don’t ask for help


The great thing about the above list, is that WE are in control of ALL of them!
